Carsforsale.com alternative: the website, separated from the marketplace.
We are going to start by defending the thing you are thinking of leaving. At $99 a month with no contract and no setup fee, Carsforsale.com is the best raw value in this category, and most of the pages telling you otherwise are selling you something at four times the price. The reason a dealer outgrows it is not that it is cheap. It is that the website is the smaller half of what you are buying — and the day your own storefront has to carry the sale on its own, "included with a marketplace subscription" starts to show.

The short answer
If the marketplace leads are working, do not cancel Carsforsale. $99/mo for exposure on Carsforsale.com plus a CRM, a website, inventory tools and free vehicle history reports is genuinely hard to beat on price, and their own FAQ is straight about the terms: "there are no contracts, setup costs, or hidden fees." Note the tier most comparison pages miss — dealers with 100+ listings start at $199/month, not $99.
You need a different website when the site itself has to do the selling: when you are running your own Google and Facebook traffic to it, when your brand matters more than the listing, or when you have hit the ceiling of what their editor lets you change. A marketplace's website product is designed to feed the marketplace, and the same shopper who lands there is one tap from your competitor's inventory.
The common answer is to run both: keep Carsforsale for the marketplace exposure, and put a storefront you control in front of your own traffic. Shopframe Lite is $29/mo for up to 15 vehicles, Starter $149 for up to 50 — so the pair costs less than most single-vendor bills in this segment.
Disclosure, up front: Shopframe sells dealer websites, and Carsforsale.com is a competitor whose pricing beats ours at some lot sizes. So section 2 of this page is a plain list of everything they do that we do not, section 4 tells you when to keep them, and every Carsforsale figure quoted here is from their own pricing page, linked at the bottom. 1 · What $99 actually buys
Read from dealers.carsforsale.com on 8 September 2026.
Carsforsale.com is a used-car marketplace first — a shopping site with millions of visitors — that bundles dealer software as the subscription around it. For $99/mo (or $199/mo above 100 listings) a dealer gets marketplace exposure on Carsforsale.com and PowerSports.com, inventory management with VIN decoding, an integrated CRM and lead management, a website with a drag-and-drop editor, window stickers, photo overlays, instant exports to 400+ partners, free vehicle history reports, soft credit checks, digital paperwork and eSignatures, a well-reviewed dealer mobile app, and live support six days a week. They report 22,500 dealerships and a 4.7-star average across 12,300 reviews.
That is a lot of software for $99, and we are not going to pretend it is not. The question this page answers is narrower: what happens to the website half when your marketing stops running through their marketplace.
2 · Everything Carsforsale does that Shopframe does not
This list is longer than the one on our other comparison pages, and it should be. If two or three of these are load-bearing for you, stay.
- The marketplace itself. This is the whole thing. Millions of shoppers browse Carsforsale.com; your cars appear in front of them. Shopframe has no marketplace and never will — we build the site your traffic lands on. If most of your leads currently come from their marketplace, cancelling it is cancelling your lead source, not your website.
- Free vehicle history reports. Included with their subscription. We do not provide history reports at all; our vehicle pages say "ask about vehicle history."
- A native mobile app, and a driver's licence scanner. Their dealer app is one of the most-praised parts of the product. Shopframe's Site Manager is an installable web app that works on a phone, which is close but not the same thing.
- Exports to 400+ marketplace partners. Ours is a CSV-based feed to the channels you set up yourself.
- Digital paperwork, eSignatures, and in-system financing and lending decisions. We are a website and lead platform; deal paperwork is not something we do. Our financing page is an inquiry form that hands the conversation to you.
- Payments through Stripe and PayPal, and profit and expense tracking. We have a sales ledger and a lot accounting workbook, which is a smaller claim.
- Phone support six days a week. Ours is email only, deliberately — but if you want to call someone, that matters.
3 · The three reasons dealers look anyway
a. The website is a feature of somebody else's marketplace
This is structural, not a criticism of their engineering. When the website ships as part of a marketplace subscription, its job is to be adequate and consistent across 22,500 dealers — not to be the best possible storefront for your specific lot. It is also, by design, adjacent to a shopping site where the next click shows a similar car from a dealer forty miles away. Dealers who are buying their own Google and Facebook traffic tend to want that traffic landing somewhere that only sells their inventory.
b. Template ceilings
The drag-and-drop editor covers the common changes; past that, dealers describe hitting a wall. From reviews of the website product specifically:
"Dated" … "generic" … "restrictive templates."
— Carsforsale.com dealer reviews on website design, Capterra (verified August 2026)
"Cookie-cutter, slow, and not built for actual SEO or conversions."
— a DealerRefresh member on "the $99 solutions (Carsforsale, DealerCenter basics, etc.)," DealerRefresh, Nov 2025
For contrast, and so you can judge whether we are any better: Shopframe gives you 4 site personalities × 6 typefaces × 12 colour palettes × 4 hero layouts — 1,152 combinations — all selectable free in the configurator before you pay, and changeable afterwards from the Site Manager. You can go and try that right now without giving us an email address, which is the only fair way to settle a design argument.
c. Getting your domain back
The one piece of friction worth planning around. BBB complaints against Carsforsale.com cite domain-release requests being reviewed only on a quarterly cycle. If they registered your domain for you, start that request early — well before you intend to move — and get it in writing while you are still a paying customer in good standing. If the domain is registered in the dealership's own name at your own registrar, none of this applies, which is exactly why we tell every dealer to own their domain regardless of who builds the site.
4 · Side by side
Carsforsale figures read from their pricing page on 8 September 2026; review quotes verified August 2026 and itemised on our comparison page. Shopframe figures are our published prices.

5 · Who should switch, and who should not
Stay on Carsforsale if…The marketplace is where your leads come from. You use the paperwork, eSignatures or financing tools. You need history reports included. You want a native app and a phone number. Or you are simply happy — at $99 with no contract, there is no trap to escape.
Look at an alternative if…You are buying your own Google, Facebook or Craigslist traffic and want it landing on a site that sells only your cars. Your brand is the reason people come to you. You have hit the editor's ceiling. You are above 100 listings and paying $199 for a website you do not love. Or you have a dozen cars and $99 is more than the website part is worth to you.
The option most dealers should consider first is not switching at all — it is running both. Keep the marketplace subscription doing what it is good at, and point your own advertising at a storefront you control. Shopframe Lite at $29 or Starter at $149 alongside Carsforsale's $99 still lands under what a single quote-only provider typically bills, and you can drop either one any month. If you do decide to move fully, the order that keeps your site online the whole way through is on our switching guide.
Build your storefront and see it side by side
Design it in the configurator with no card and no email address — or tell us what you are running now and we will email you a preview plus an honest read on whether switching is even worth it for your lot.
Questions dealers ask about Carsforsale.com
- How much does Carsforsale.com cost for dealers?
- Carsforsale.com is $99 a month flat for most independent dealers, and their pricing page states that dealers with 100 or more listings start at $199 a month. Their FAQ says there are no contracts, setup costs or hidden fees. That price includes marketplace exposure on Carsforsale.com and PowerSports.com, a CRM, inventory management, a website, window stickers, free vehicle history reports and phone support six days a week.
- What is the best Carsforsale.com alternative for a dealer website?
- If you want the website itself to be the product rather than part of a marketplace subscription, Shopframe starts at $29 a month for up to 15 vehicles and $149 for up to 50, with 1,152 design combinations you can preview free before paying. AutoCorner is comparable on price at $29 to $79 a month by unit count. Dealer Car Search and DealerCenter sit higher and quote rather than publish. But note that none of these replaces the marketplace exposure, which is the main thing you are actually paying Carsforsale for.
- Should I cancel Carsforsale.com if I get a new website?
- Usually not straight away. The marketplace exposure and the website are two different products bundled at one price, and dealers who cancel to save $99 often discover they cancelled their lead source. The lower-risk sequence is to run both for a month or two, tag where each lead actually comes from, and then decide. At $99 with no contract you can drop it any month, so there is no penalty for waiting until you have the data.
- Are Carsforsale.com websites good?
- They are adequate and consistent, which is what a website bundled into a marketplace subscription is designed to be. The drag-and-drop editor covers common changes. Where dealers push back is design range: Capterra reviewers describe the sites as dated, generic and built on restrictive templates, and a DealerRefresh member characterised the $99 tier of the market as cookie-cutter and not built for real SEO or conversions. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether your own advertising traffic has to convert on that site.
- Can I keep my domain name if I leave Carsforsale.com?
- Yes, but start early if they registered it for you. BBB complaints against Carsforsale.com cite domain-release requests being reviewed only on a quarterly cycle, so request the transfer in writing well before you intend to move and while your account is still in good standing. If your domain is registered in the dealership's own name at your own registrar, none of this applies, which is the best argument for always owning your domain yourself regardless of who builds your site.
- Does Shopframe list my cars on a marketplace like Carsforsale.com does?
- No. Shopframe builds and hosts your own storefront, and we have no marketplace of our own. What we give you instead is an ad builder that produces ready-to-paste Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace listings for any vehicle, and CSV inventory export you can feed to the channels you already use. If marketplace exposure is where your leads come from today, keep the subscription that provides it and use us for the site your own advertising points at.
- Is Shopframe cheaper than Carsforsale.com?
- At the small end yes, in the middle no, and that is worth being straight about. Shopframe Lite is $29 a month for up to 15 vehicles, which is well under $99. Starter is $149 for up to 50 vehicles, which is more than $99, and Growth is $299 with edits done for you. So a twelve-car lot pays less with us and a forty-car lot pays more, and in exchange gets a site it fully controls rather than a website bundled with a marketplace. Compare on what each price is buying rather than on the number alone.
- Do Carsforsale.com dealers have to sign a contract?
- No. Their FAQ states plainly that there are no contracts, setup costs or hidden fees, and their pricing page repeats it. That is genuinely one of the better terms in this category and is a real point in their favour compared with providers that use auto-renewing terms and non-refundable fees. Shopframe is also month to month with no setup fee, so on contract terms specifically the two of us are even.
